Performance [521] 4-May-2025 (Childstar Tour - Headliner)

Notes

Grace opened her “CHILDSTAR” tour at Lincoln Hall in Chicago. At the Q&A before the concert she revealed shat she had already started wiriting her next album and that she was inspired by James Bond for it” Even with a set of 12 songs, Grace’s part of the concert was fairly brief – about 50 minutes, mainly because she spoke very little between songs. She has no band for the tour, probably due to the limited stage space and working with dancers on stage. For one song, “Ur So Beautiful,” Grace played an electric guitar. That was the first time she had accompanied herself on anything but a ukulele at a “real” concert.

“The crowd was stoked to hear VanderWaal, who carries this particular tune [Proud] with a strong vocal performance. She stretches out words with power in her voice. Another captivating part of VanderWaal’s performances is the use of choreography and an accompanying dance crew. Several dancers surround VanderWaal on stage for the majority of her show, creating an astounding performance that is rare for shows in venues as intimate as these. This is ultimately a pop show, though, so there’s unlimited fun and creative spells to be had.” (Ban Pagini for Beyond The Stage Magazine, May 9, 2025)

”Thumping synths and drums clearly differentiated it from her past works, but her familiar powerful vocals blend beautifully with the production and meaningfully enhance the song, as delivered in her near-perfect performance. Her signature voice cracks are charming, and I was continuously completely blown away by the casual riffs and raw emotion bleeding through her voice. … Although Lincoln Hall is an intimate venue beloved by Chicago locals, its modest stage and limited technical capacity don’t necessarily lend itself to elaborate productions. There is minimal space for a live band, much less with backup dancers involved. Still, Vanderwaal navigated the constraints with ease and creativity. She embraced the small stage rather than trying to overpower it, and in doing so, gave the performance an honesty and vulnerability that may have been lost in a more extravagant setting. It was a reminder that her talent doesn’t need embellishment—it speaks for itself. (Joyce Zhang for Firebird Magazine May 27, 2025. – A student magazine for the University of Chicago)
